IRMO, SC – The Lexington-Richland School District Five Board of Trustees has approved the hiring of Reggie Kennedy as head football coach and athletic director for Irmo High School.

He replaces longtime coach Bob Hanna who announced plans to retire last month. Kennedy is currently head football coach at Sumter High School and will officially take the new role at Irmo High on July 1. The board voted 6-0 for Kennedy during a May 19 school board meeting.

“It’s an honor to take on this new role as head coach and athletic director for Irmo High School,” Kennedy said. “I look forward to this new role, serving the Irmo community and continuing the tradition of excellence at the school.”

In his first season at Sumter High School, Kennedy led the Gamecocks to a 9-6 record and a runner-up finish in the Class 4A Division I state title. He has been a head coach in South Carolina since 1995 and in 19 seasons has earned a 140-87 record.

Irmo High Principal David Riegel said, “When we spoke with Coach Kennedy, we were impressed with his knowledge and winning attitude.  He comes very highly recommended and will do a great job leading our football program and our entire athletic department.  Coach Kennedy has found a home in District Five.”
