Dominion Energy invests $12,000 in United Way of the Midlands to support the Midlands Reading Consortium

December 27, 2019

Dominion Energy presented United Way of the Midlands with a sponsorship of $12,000 to provide support for the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) at Cayce Elementary School in Lexington School District Two.

Through its support of MRC, a volunteer tutoring initiative targeting pre-kindergarten through second-grade students, 28 Dominion Energy employees provide one-on-one tutoring each week to help elementary school students improve their literacy skills and develop a love of reading. The company also provided reading nooks and 700 literacy kits for students that were packed as part of a community service project with SC Chamber of Commerce Business Week participants earlier this year.

“When companies like Dominion Energy invest in our community, the possibilities are infinite and allow us the opportunity to create long-term change in our community,” said Sara Fawcett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “We’re providing books, teaching support and training to schools through our MRC program, and investment in education will make a positive impact on our community. This investment will allow us to continue serving our Midlands students to improve literacy skills, so children are reading on grade level and are on track to graduate on time.”

United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium a library of services including a one-to-one tutoring program, parent engagement events, guest reading opportunities for both individuals and companies and summer reading camp opportunities.

“Whether it is through the countless hours Dominion Energy employees volunteer to provide one-on-one tutoring, or through funds that we give for important reading materials and equipment, investing in the communities we serve is both a privilege and a responsibility that we take seriously,” said Rodney Blevins, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “We are pleased to support United Way of the Midlands and the important work they do to promote academic achievement for students.”

Last year, MRC served over 600 students in Richland, Lexington and Newberry counties with the help of more than 300 volunteers. United Way focuses on education strategies that provide a firm foundation at an early age and continue to help develop our children into successful adults who can contribute to their communities.

Volunteer opportunities are still available for those interested in participating in MRC for the 2019-2020 school year. For more information, including a list of participating schools, visit volunteer.uway.org/mrc.
