Dominion Energy partners with organization to install wheelchair ramps in Midlands homes

October 6, 2021

EmmanuWheel, a Midlands nonprofit that installs wheelchair ramps for mobility-impaired people, is among 26 South Carolina organizations to receive the latest round of Dominion Energy Critical Community Needs grants.

Since 2009, EmmanuWheel has worked with churches, businesses and families to build wheelchair ramps, funded through donations. Its clients often have impaired mobility due to illnesses, accidents, birth defects, or degenerative conditions.

“EmmanuWheel shares the love of Christ by providing wheelchair ramps to people in need that can’t afford them,” said Chris Sharpe, EmmanuWheel managing director. “We now have 20 active build teams that build ramps in Lexington, Richland and Saluda counties.”

Community members in need are referred to EmmanuWheel from hospitals, social services agencies, medical facilities, churches or other charitable organizations. Although participants are given the opportunity to pay for materials, volunteer laborers donate their services to install the ramps.

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $250,000 to 26 local nonprofits engaged in meeting the critical needs of South Carolina communities, including food, housing and medical care.

“Dominion Energy is pleased to partner with EmmanuWheel to help improve the safety and accessibility of homes for people in need,” said Rodney Blevins, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “This organization enhances people’s lives in such a meaningful way by providing a practical and important service.”

Applications were open to eligible organizations in states across Dominion Energy’s footprint. Learn more about Dominion Energy’s Critical Community Needs grants at DominionEnergy.com.
