Dominion supports American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign

Smoke Alarms installed by Red Cross and partners have saved 11 lives in South Carolina since December

The American Red Cross announced that the Dominion Foundation, on behalf of Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission, has donated $25,000 to American Red Cross of South Carolina for its Home Fire Campaign. The gift enables the Red Cross to help families and communities prevent and prepare for home fires across South Carolina.

“We are grateful for the assistance of partners like Dominion who are helping us reduce deaths and injuries from the most common disaster that we see – home fires,” said Louise Welch Williams, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross of South Carolina. “In South Carolina eleven lives have been saved by the work of our volunteers and partners and we are continuing to protect families across the state.”

Home fires are the most common disaster in the United States. In just minutes a family can lose everything, from their belongings to their home, and most tragically, a loved one. Home fires occur more often than most people realize; in South Carolina, the Red Cross responds to requests from local fire departments every 3.9 hours to come to the aid of victims affected by home fires.

The Home Fire Campaign aims to decrease deaths and injuries due to home fires by educating families on how to prevent home fires and what to do in the case of a home fire. Thanks to generous donors like Dominion, volunteers from the Red Cross are installing 50,000 smoke alarms in South Carolina homes and educating thousands of families on fire safety. So far in South Carolina, eleven lives have been saved by the campaign.

“Safety is a core value at Dominion. The Dominion Foundation is proud to support the American Red Cross and the Home Fire Campaign’s mission to educate families on fire safety and install 50,000 smoke alarms in South Carolina homes,” said Keith Windle, General Manager for Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
