The Charleston Metro Chamber announced Dr. Jairy C. Hunter as the recipient of the 2019 Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award, which will be presented at The Honors, the first portion of the Chamber’s annual Member-Bration.

Named after one of the region’s most notable and popular leaders, the late father of Former Mayor Joe Riley, the Joseph P. Riley award was initiated in 1992 by the Charleston Metro Chamber. This prestigious award recognizes an outstanding volunteer who has, through a lifetime of leadership, committed to making the community a better place to live, work and do business. The recipients of this award are dedicated to serving and strengthening the Charleston community.

Through an outstanding dedication to higher education and community involvement, Dr. Hunter has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership. Serving as the president of Charleston Southern University for more than 30 years, his impact on everyone he meets is meaningful and long-lasting.

Not only has he made positive strides in higher education, he has also served on a variety of for-profit and not-for-profit boards, including the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) and five years on the Charleston Metro Chamber board. Dr. Hunter was bestowed the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor, by the Governor of South Carolina and was awarded the state’s Order of the Silver Crescent, for those who have made significant contributions to the life and well-being of South Carolina.

Dr. Hunter will be honored for his continued passion for leading, teaching and mentoring as well as his years of dedication to the Charleston region at The Honors, the first portion of our Member-Bration event on November 14. The Honors reception from 5 – 6 p.m. will pay homage to Dr. Hunter and other outstanding business leaders and organizations who continue to do exceptional work in our region.

Immediately following The Honors award ceremony, guests will have the opportunity to eat, drink and mingle with 500 fellow Chamber members at The Celebration.
