Dr. Laurie Theriot, MD, to Chair Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Greenville
February 5, 2025Dr. Laurie Theriot is serving as the Executive Event Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Greenville, returning for a second year in the vital volunteer role. Theriot, who is the Chief of Geriatric Medicine for Prisma Health in the Upstate and the Medical Director for Interim Healthcare of the Upstate, will serve as the volunteer leader of the local Walk, working with Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers to ensure its success.
“As a Geriatrician, I see firsthand how this devastating disease affects patient and their families,” said Theriot. “The Alzheimer’s Association is crucial to supporting the patient and their family as they navigate their dementia journey. I do my part, as an ally, to ensure the needed resources are available now and that research is funded so we have a future where they are no longer needed.”
Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In South Carolina there are more than 112,500 people living with the disease and 219,000 caregivers.
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. The 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Greenville is currently slated for Saturday, October 4, at Fluor Field at the West End.
“It takes a massive amount of resources, both time and money, to meaningfully move the needle on a disease like this. But we are moving the needle, and it’s exciting,” Theriot said. “If you aren’t already involved with Walk to End Alzheimer’s, now is the time to join us. In the not-so-distant future when dementia is an easily treatable, if not curable disease, we will look back at this moment when the tides turned in our favor — and I will be honored to say that I was a part of it.”
