Dr. Matilda Evans Author Talk Rescheduled for May 12 at Fountain Inn Museum

April 29, 2026

History enthusiasts and community members will have to wait just a bit longer to hear the story of a South Carolina medical pioneer. The highly anticipated author talk and book signing, “Dr. Matilda A. Evans: The Life of a Trailblazer,” has been rescheduled for May 12, 2026, due to illness.

The event, featuring Dr. Walter Curry, was originally slated for an earlier date but will now take place at 6:00 PM on May 12th at the Fountain Inn Museum, located at 102 Depot Street.

Honoring a Medical Pioneer

Dr. Matilda A. Evans was a monumental figure in South Carolina history. As the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state, she was a fierce advocate for public health, healthcare equity, and education. Dr. Curry’s work, South Carolina’s Matilda Evans: A Medical Pioneer, delves into her legacy as a surgeon, educator, and community leader who founded several hospitals and a nursing school.

Exhibit Remains Open

While the speaking engagement has been pushed back, the museum’s corresponding exhibit on Dr. Evans remains open to the public. Residents are encouraged to visit the museum during regular hours to explore her “special story” before the exhibit concludes on May 16.
