Dr. Perry Halushka, Dean Emeritus MUSC, to Deliver GSSM Convocation Address

HARTSVILLE, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce Dr. Perry Halushka, Distinguished University Professor and Dean Emeritus, College of Graduate Studies, MUSC, will serve as keynote speaker for GSSM’s Convocation Ceremony Thursday, September 11, 2 p.m., at the Center Theater in Hartsville.
Dr. Perry Halushka, who is also a member of GSSM’s Board of Trustees, received his PhD and MD degrees from the University of Chicago. After completing an internship and residency in internal medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health, he joined MUSC’s faculty as an assistant professor of pharmacology and medicine. He rose through the ranks to become Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine.
In 2000 Halushka was named Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, a position he held for 13 years. He is widely known for his research on thromboxane receptors and has published over 200 scientific papers, over 50 book chapters and invited scientific reviews.
Halushka currently holds the titles of Distinguished University Professor and Dean Emeritus, College of Graduate Studies. During his tenure as Dean he was particularly proud of the annual, mentored summer research program that the College of Graduate Studies hosted for GSSM’s students.
“We’re excited to welcome Dr. Halushka to this year’s convocation,” says Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. “Because he has seen the work our students have done in MUSC’s research labs, he knows exactly what they are capable of achieving. His remarks will be an inspirational way to begin our school year and to welcome our incoming class.”
GSSM serves a high-achieving segment of the state’s high school juniors and seniors who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. One of only 12 public, residential high schools in the country that specializes in science and math, GSSM offers students a college environment, research opportunities and challenging academics.
Convocation serves as an opportunity to award academic letters to returning seniors and welcome incoming juniors. Classes began on August 19 with 145 incoming juniors joining as the Class of 2016.
