Duke Energy Foundation Awards $15,000 Grant to Conestee Nature Preserve for ADA Trail Improvements

June 24, 2026

Conestee Nature Preserve is set to expand its outdoor accessibility thanks to a newly awarded grant aimed at improving trail infrastructure for visitors of all physical abilities.

The Duke Energy Foundation officially presented a $15,000 check to the Conestee Foundation on June 22, 2026. The dedicated funding is designated specifically for ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) trail enhancements throughout the wildlife sanctuary.

Expanding Access to Natural Spaces

The upcoming project focuses on updating and modifying existing pathways within the preserve to meet strict accessibility standards. By leveling terrain, widening specific trail segments, and implementing smoother surface materials, the initiative aims to eliminate barriers for individuals utilizing wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers.

Conestee Nature Preserve encompasses approximately 400 acres of protected natural habitat, including wetlands, forests, and extensive boardwalks along the Reedy River. While the preserve already features several paved and boardwalk sections, this targeted funding will bridge existing infrastructure gaps, opening up previously restricted scenic areas to the entire public.

A Commitment to Inclusive Recreation

Representatives involved in the presentation emphasized that outdoor recreation and environmental education should be equitably accessible. The planned enhancements will allow individuals with mobility challenges to fully experience the rich biodiversity and natural beauty that the local landmark offers.

Work on the trail upgrades is expected to roll out in phases to minimize disruptions along the preserve’s primary loops. Visitors are encouraged to monitor upcoming trail maps and look out for localized detour signage as construction crews begin the accessibility updates.
