October 21, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – EdVenture Children’s Museum is pleased to host the 50th anniversary celebration of Head Start on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  EdVenture will provide a fun-filled morning of music, play, storytelling, science and exercise for 1,000 Head Start students and their caregivers from across South Carolina.

This exciting day will begin with a celebration at 10:30 a.m. on EdVenture’s Congaree Terrace and will continue with a sing-a-long and the reading of a passage from the Head Start Awareness Month Proclamation signed by Governor Nikki Haley in commemoration of the anniversary.

“This year, we celebrate 50 years of Head Start,” said Evelyn Patterson, president of the SC State Head Start Association. “It is a historic milestone that presents a perfect opportunity to reflect on how we have evolved. It also encourages us to renew our continued passion and commitment for providing high-quality services to our families.”

The museum will be extending the My Backyard early childhood exhibit to cover the entire second floor with activities for the Head Start students. There will be a special guest appearance from Curious George and some of Columbia’s local firefighters, who will participate in story time.  The day will conclude with lunch on the museum’s terrace.

“Both Head Start and EdVenture lead South Carolina with initiatives to build first-class learning opportunities for all children throughout the state,” said Nikki Williams, executive vice president of external relations at EdVenture.  “EdVenture is delighted to partner with Head Start to celebrate the success of such a wonderful mission. We plan to wow every student who walks through our doorson Thursday!”
