Nick Osborne, President and CEO, Lowcountry Food Bank
The Lowcountry Food Bank(opens in new tab) is rethinking what it means to fight hunger across the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina. In 2025, the organization distributed more than 42 million pounds of food through a network of more than 240 partner agencies, including meal programs, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries.
President and CEO Nick Osborne says the work increasingly involves understanding what those partner agencies need to be more effective in their own communities. It’s an approach rooted in asset framing — moving away from what Osborne calls a “savioristic” mindset of telling communities what they need and toward working alongside local organizations, building on their strengths and empowering them to develop solutions.
Innovation is also playing an important role in that strategy. The Lowcountry Food Bank is using tools such as GIS mapping to more precisely identify areas of food insecurity, understand where gaps in service exist and better target its resources. Osborne, who has led the organization since December 2020, discusses how data, technology, strong community partnerships and a more empowering approach can work together to address food insecurity across coastal South Carolina.
