euphoria announces 2019 Healthy Lunchtime Throwdown winner

October 3, 2019

Greenville County Schools and euphoria presented by Lexus named Nathaniel Kingdom, a student at the Donaldson Career Center, the winner of the fifth annual Healthy Lunchtime Throwdown. Kingdom wowed the judges with his Banh Mi Chicken Sandwich recipe, which he prepared on the culinary stage at euphoria’s Sunday Brunch: Fired Up! on September 22, with the help of Michelin-starred chef Curtis Duffy of Chicago (photos). Kingdom’s recipe will be added to the Greenville County Schools lunch menu during the 2019-2020 school year.

euphoria’s signature kids’ recipe and cooking contest is designed to enhance students’ understanding of the benefits of healthy lifestyles, while also showcasing exciting culinary industry careers to Greenville’s future workforce. District students ages 8-18 submitted original, healthy, affordable recipes for consideration, and the top four were chosen by a panel of judges to compete in the cook-off.

“The Healthy Lunchtime Throwdown gives students a chance to take an active role in improving the health, nutrition and appeal of the dishes served on our school lunch menu,” said Joe Urban, director of Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services. “The finalists had the priceless opportunity to work alongside world-class chefs and develop their own culinary skills for careers in the dynamic and growing culinary industry.”

The other finalists were: Dawn Perricone from the Golden Strip Career Center (Stuffed Bruschetta Chicken), Logan McCall from the Golden Strip Career Center (Corn Slaw Fish Tacos with Mango Salsa) and Joanna Sanchez from the Enoree Career Center (Chickpea Shakshuka). Michelin-starred chefs Melissa Rodriguez (New York), Teague Moriarty (San Francisco) and Dan Giusti (Washington, DC) served as sous chefs for the competition.

“From day one, euphoria’s mission has always been to showcase the diversity and depth of culinary talent and cuisine in our community,” said Morgan Allen, Executive Director of euphoria. “We are so grateful for our partnership with Greenville County Schools and the chance to reach more families in our community and promote the importance of healthy eating through our Healthy Lunchtime Throwdown competition.”
