CHARLESTON, SC – July 2, 2012 – Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina taught a class on the basics of estate planning and probate at the Berkeley County Hanahan Library in Hanahan, SC on Wednesday May 2nd 2012.

The class explored the beginning principles of planning an estate, the difference between probate and non-probate assets, the different types of plans for estates, what happens in probate court, advance directives and healthcare decisions, planning in case of incapacity and power of attorneys, and common estate plan mistakes that most people make. This was the first time that attorney Evan Guthrie presented a class at Hanahan Library and the third presentation he had made in the current year in the Berkeley County Library System. The library was opened up after normal operating hours to make time and space for the class as the entire library was used and only attendees were allowed inside.

The class lasted about an hour in duration and included a powerpoint presentation and a handout. The presentation was well attended with many quality questions asked that included how to protect someone with a disability with a special needs trust and why it may not be a good idea to put a child on a bank account or land with joint title. Attorney Guthrie was happy to be able to give back to the local community by teaching on a subject that is of vital importance to so many people. Planning an estate is something that everyone should do regardless of how many assets one has or how old one is to protect your health and family.
