October 24, 2012

IRMO, SC – October 24, 2012 – The guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo meeting for the October 24, 2012 was retired Colonel Craig J. Currey, Chief Operating Officer and Interim Executive Director of Transitions.

Transitions is a homeless center at Elmwood and Main Streets in Columbia, SC open to men and women, but not children.  There are currently 201 beds at the center and by later this year there will be 260 beds.  The center provides counseling, meals and beds in an effort to get homeless people off the street permanently and into housing with a source of income.  93% of those using the center are from South Carolina (70% from Richland County, 10% from Lexington County and 13% from other counties around the state).  Only 7% of those using the center are from out of state.

Craig Currey has 30 years of leadership experience as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and over ten years of experience in the Columbia area on Fort Jackson.  His final military job was as the Deputy Commanding Officer of Fort Jackson.  He possesses not only an understanding of Transitions’ long-term goals, but also the leadership and drive to see them accomplished. The MHA board and the staff of Transitions are excited about the mission of transforming homelessness into self-reliance.  They are committed to new success while achieving the vision of becoming a world class facility that helps end homelessness in the Greater Columbia Area.  Craig is also a member of the Rotary Club of Spring Valley.
