Explore the Northern Lights and meet Santa this holiday season at the State Museum
October 22, 2026Plus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D returns and more.
This holiday season, guests are invited to visit the South Carolina State Museum to experience the beauty of the Northern Lights in the Áróra planetarium show, enjoy the returning holiday favorite Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D, and enjoy special events, including the return of the Museum’s annual Holiday Planetarium Lighting.
Beginning Nov. 1st, the digital dome planetarium experience, Áróra, will take guests on an immersive cinematic journey across remote Icelandic landscapes and into space to explore the mystery and science behind the Northern Lights. The show also highlights how this fascinating phenomenon has been represented in folktales and mythology across the world. It is a must-see experience for families and friends to enjoy this winter.
Lighting up the museum’s holiday season, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D returns with high-definition 3-D visuals and immersive effects, including wind and snow. Showing Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 in the museum’s 4D theater, this 10-minute show features the same stop-motion animation as the beloved television classic. Guests can join Rudolph, Hermey the Elf, Yukon Cornelius, and all their friends on a timeless adventure filled with music, laughter, and holiday cheer.
The museum invites guests to explore the galleries after hours during the annual Holiday Planetarium Lighting on Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 4 – 8:30 p.m. In addition to extended hours, this special evening will feature a chance to meet Santa, holiday shows in the museum’s 4D theater and planetarium, extra shopping time in the Museum Store, a holiday family activity, night-sky viewing (weather permitting), a live performance by Cola Jazz, and more. At 7 p.m., guests will be invited outside to watch the museum’s 55-foot planetarium dome transform into a giant snow globe as it is illuminated for the holidays. The dome will be lit each night after dark throughout December.
Santa Claus will also visit the State Museum on Santa Saturdays in November and December. Families can share their holiday wishes and take photos with Santa on Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 12 and 19. Guests are welcome to take pictures with their own phones or cameras for free with the purchase of a general admission ticket to the museum.
