Fall Fabric – Tweed

Tweed is a quintessential fall fabric and has been worn by European high society, nerdy professors and everyone in between, but what exactly is it?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines tweed as a rough, woolen cloth that is woven with different color threads.  Traditionally used for suits and outerwear for its weather resistant qualities, tweed was first worn for hunting, shooting, fishing and other outdoor sportsman games by the European elite.  Now you can find tweed in every major designer’s collection.  Here are a few of my favorite tweed items for the season:

1.    Coats.  One of the most common incarnations of tweed is the coat.  The classic tweed blazer is reaching new heights now with bold and vibrant color like this one in brick red.  We can also find tweed overcoats, hunting jackets and in motorcycle jackets which is the perfect crossover of two major fall trends.  Now whether your look is classic or edgy there is a tweed option ready and available.

2.    Pants.  Another classic piece that has been given a modern update with a simple monochromatic palette.  Since few people can really pull off plaid pants opting for tweed with the classic herringbone or chevron motif is a no-fail way to go.

One note of caution, wool can be a stiff, heavy fabric.  I recommend looking for lighter blends and weights that drape beautifully.  They will not only feel more comfortable, but look so as well.

3.    Hats.
If you want to on point this season you should never leave the house without a hat.  Just like the scarf, hats are making a surge in popularity and will likely be prominent for several seasons.  Try a tweed hat and watch it quickly become the perfect addition to set your outfit apart.

Not a seasoned hat person?  Have no fear.  Start by trying on all shapes and sizes.  There will be that undeniable moment when you find the perfect style hat.

4.    Accessories.  Today there is no limit to where you can find tweed.  Shoes, watches, bags and ties are all available in tweed.  You can also find tablet and phone covers in tweed, so there is no reason not to follow this trend.

Tweed sure has come a long way.  From fashion for the elite to characteristic nerd and back to one of falls hottest ‘must have’ fabrics tweed may have a long and winding story, but there is no denying it is resilient and a fixture in the world of fashion.
