Family Shelter Names Goodwin as Board President

Homeless Shelter Elects 2015-16 Officers

COLUMBIA, SC – Family Shelter, an emergency shelter for homeless families in the Midlands, has elected Joy S. Goodwin as its board president beginning July 1, 2015. Goodwin is an attorney who currently serves as a standing Chapter 13 bankruptcy trustee for the District of South Carolina. Goodwin has served on the Family Shelter board for the past five years and prior to being named president, Goodwin chaired the Governance Committee.

Joining Goodwin as Family Shelter Board officers are, Kimberly Snipes of the South Carolina Bar Association as vice president, Becky Grantland a Community Volunteer as secretary, and Chris Gibbons of Schmoyer & Company, LLC, will continue as treasurer. In addition to the new officers, the board welcomed several new board members: Rose Alford, Sean Branham, Rhonda Hughey, Kari Humphrey and Nancy Koons.

“Family Shelter is honored to have such a dedicated group of officers and board members who are dedicated to our mission of helping homeless families. This is a transitional year for Family Shelter as we have many new projects, programs and opportunities on the horizon – all of which aim to improve the lives of our residents. Working with our board, staff and volunteers I know we will achieve our goals,” says Stephanie Stuckey, Family Shelter executive director.

Established in 1979, Family Shelter provides emergency housing services to couples with children, single-mothers and single fathers. In addition to providing traditional case management and support services, Family Shelter offers a variety of education and enrichment activities for parents and children

The mission of Family Shelter is to provide emergency shelter in a stable living environment for homeless children and their parents and help our residents build life skills needed to regain independence.

“Our goal is to provide every family the skills and resources necessary to move into a safe and stable living environment,” says Goodwin. “Through the generosity of the community – churches, foundations, businesses and individuals – we are able to offer a variety of programs for both children and their parents.”
