Final Days of Dalí Exhibition Pack a Punch with Programs

In the closing days of the major exhibition Salvador Dalí’s Fantastical Fairy Tales, the Columbia Museum of Art offers a variety of programs to engage and entertain the community. Each program offers its own unique way to experience the exhibition, which showcases the iconic artist’s signature playfulness, inventiveness, and fine draftsmanship through his illustrations for literary classics including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Don Quixote, and the tales of Hans Christian Andersen, on view throughSunday, May 21.

 

Spark Tours
Fridays | 2:00 p.m.
The CMA offers quick, 30-minute Spark Tours of Salvador Dalí’s Fantastical Fairy Tales. These fun tours spark the imagination of busy people with limited time to visit the museum or those interested in a brief overview of the show before exploring more on their own. Free with membership or admission.

Saturdays | 1:00 p.m.
A guided tour provides an overview of Salvador Dalí’s Fantastical Fairy Tales, offering a chance to explore the connections between art and literature while marveling at Dalí’s creativity and craftsmanship. Free with membership or admission.

A Thousand Words: Illustrations in Rare Books
Thursday, May 11 | 1:00 p.m.
Librarian Michael C. Weisenburg from the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections explores illustrated literature from Hans Christian Andersen’s tales, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures inWonderland, and Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Passport to Art: Drawing like Dalí
Sunday, May 14 | Noon – 3:00 p.m.
Surrealist artists like Salvador Dalí used a technique called automatic drawing. Families try it themselves in our studios and get up close and personal with his work in a 1:00 p.m.tour. Free.

Dalí Revealed: A Lecture with Dirk Armstrong of The Dalí Museum
Tuesday, May 16 | 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday, May 17 | Noon
Assistant Curator Dirk Armstrong from The Dalí Museum illuminates the artist and the extraordinary prints in Salvador Dalí’s Fantastical Fairy Tales. Dalí is one of the great modern artists of the 20th century. He believed that dreams were as real as so-called reality and that art created from visions could be as insightful as realism, if not more so. Galleries and the CMA Shop will be opening during both programs. Evening lecture features a cash bar. Free with membership or admission. Supported by SC Humanities.

Gladys’ Gang: Swirly, Curvy, Topsy-Turvy
Wednesday, May 17 | 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Some artwork is a little bit crazy! Attendees explore the work of Salvador Dalí and all of his bright colors, swooping lines, and whimsical shapes, then create some surreal scenes of their own. Participants (ages 2 – 5) and their adult companions explore art through the introduction of elementary art terms such as color, line, shape, and texture during the Gladys’ Gang series. This program includes story time and a creative studio activity related to the art exploration theme. Free. Key topic: Shape.

Arts & Draughts
Friday, May 19 | 7:00 – 11:00 p.m.
Art, drink, and be merry! Columbia’s signature interactive party returns with tastings of Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s Vienna Lager and Eight Point IPA courtesy the Whig and live music from Nepotism, Sangfroid, Ouroboros Boys, and more, with DJ Siji spinning between sets. Attendees can also make their Dalí-inspired painting, go on a tour ofEnduring Spirit: The Art of Tyrone Geter with the artist himself, take a photo in our collaborative surreal-scape with their best Dalí mustache, try the scavenger hunt through the galleries, make D.I.Y. art projects with South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and Experience Columbia, pull a print with USC’s Ink & Paper, take a unique perspective tour of Salvador Dalí’s Fantastical Fairy Tales, and get a bite from Real Mexico and the Wurst Wagen.
