A special screening and awards event will be hosted in Columbia on June 11

After a record number of entries and an exhaustive judging process, the 2022 South Carolina Young Filmmakers Project finalists have been announced. The 11 two-minute short films will screen on Saturday, June 11, at 2pm at Richland Library Sandhills in Columbia (763 Fashion Dr., Columbia, SC, 29229). The event is free and open to the public.

Designed to foster media arts skills and bring attention to the next generation of South Carolina media professionals, the Young Filmmakers Project is an annual statewide high school filmmaking competition hosted by Trident Technical College and the South Carolina Film Commission. It’s accompanied by a series of instructional programs for students and educators such as screenings, meet-ups, and panels with South Carolina crew and department heads.

“Video content is such a huge part of our world today,” said Glenn Seale, Dean of Film, Media and Visual Arts at Trident Technical College. “It’s a craft that many students are naturally drawn to, and we’re using the Young Filmmakers Project to help them understand how to produce good content and make a career out of it.”

“It’s exciting to see the films these students come up with,” said Matt Storm, Director of the South Carolina Film Commission. “They represent the future of South Carolina filmmaking and that future looks bright.”

All South Carolina high school students, including public, private, and homeschooled students, were eligible to enter. Entries were scored by a panel of independent judges based on the quality of script and story, overall production value, and approach to the creative challenge (each film was required to incorporate a locket as a prop).

The June 11 screening will include Q&A with the filmmakers, an awards ceremony, and a reception. First Prize receives $500, Second Prize $300, and Third Prize $200.
