First Day of School Reminder: Mauldin Fire Department Issues Traffic Safety Guidelines

With students set to return to the classroom on Tuesday, August 11, the Mauldin Fire Department is urging drivers to stay vigilant, slow down, and prioritize road safety throughout local school zones.

Under the campaign headline “Safety Starts With Everyone,” emergency responders are reminding motorists across the area that increased traffic, school buses, and pedestrian activity require extra caution during morning and afternoon commutes.

Essential Back-to-School Safety Rules

• Stop for School Buses: Drivers in all directions must come to a complete stop when red bus lights are flashing and the side stop arm is extended.

• Watch for Children: Kids can be excited and unpredictable. Stay especially alert in school zones, residential neighborhoods, and near bus stops.

• Slow Down: Obey posted speed limits and exercise reduced speeds in active school zones.

• Give Them Space: Maintain extra stopping distance around school buses and give pedestrians plenty of clearance at crosswalks.

• Buckle Up: Model safe behavior for young passengers by ensuring everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled on every ride.

Department officials emphasize that protecting students requires a full community effort as the new academic year begins. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during school pickup and drop-off hours.
