First Lady Honors South Carolina Mother of the Year Mrs. Betty Jean Ulmer McGregor Honored at Governor's Mansion

March 10, 2009

COLUMBIA, S.C. –  March 10, 2009- First Lady Jenny Sanford welcomes the South Carolina Mother of the Year, Mrs. Betty Jean Ulmer McGregor, to the Governor’s Mansion this afternoon.  Following the presentation of the certificate and pin in a private ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion, Mrs. McGregor will be hosted by Mrs. Sanford and the South Carolina Mother of the Year Search Committee at a tea by invitation only at the Governor’s Mansion.

South Carolina Mother of the Year, Mrs. Betty Jean Ulmer McGregor of Cameron, is the 67th to be named to this honor.  Mrs. McGregor is a graduate of Columbia College and has spent much her life supporting her husband and her children.  In her husband’s words, Mrs. McGregor is a ‘professional mom.’ She describes parenting as an awesome responsibility, requiring prayer, energy, sacrifice, time, and love.  Mrs. McGregor is a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Sanford said, Mrs. McGregor exemplifies what motherhood is all about- she is dedicated to her family and has instilled in each of them an attitude of service and strong faith.  Mark and I live by the principals that you only get one chance to raise your children and that our four boys are our most important legacy.  It is clear that this resonates in the McGregor family.

Each year since 1942 an outstanding mother in the Palmetto State has been selected as South Carolina Mother of the Year.  She is chosen by a search committee from nominees submitted from all across the state.  The annual Convention of American Mothers will be held in Portland, Oregon when this year’s American Mother of the Year will be announced.
