First Library Referendum for Charleston County in 28 years on November 4th Ballot

October 9, 2014
Plan Calls for 5 New Libraries, 13 Renovated Libraries

CHARLESTON, SC – Not since 1986 have voters been asked to upgrade and improve Charleston County Libraries. That’s when Whitney Houston was at the top of the charts and Ronald Reagan was President!

More importantly, it was before most people had ever heard of the Internet.
That’s why a YES vote on the November 4th referendum is so important for the future of libraries in Charleston County. The plan calls for new, state-of-the-art libraries in North Charleston, West Ashley, Mt. Pleasant, Hollywood-Ravenel and James Island. Voters will also see renovations at the remaining 13 libraries that will see improved technology at every location.

“This referendum will take us into the 21st Century by offering new technology, more books and better meeting rooms for our charities and organizations,” said Vote Yes for Charleston Libraries Committee Chairwoman Janet Segal, “we will also see more modern spaces and services for our teens, children and senior citizens.”

Mayors from almost every municipality in Charleston County have thrown their full support behind the referendum and are now appearing in a TV commercial urging people to Vote Yes.

The need for improved libraries has never been greater as Charleston County Public Libraries continue to shatter attendance records:

    • 2013 Circulation: 3.3-million
    • 2013 Visitors: 1.9-million
    • 2013 Library Card Holders: 260,000
The $108-million referendum is spelled out in detail at www.VoteYesforCharlestonLibraries.com.  It will cost less than a movie ticket and popcorn, just $11.20 per year, on an owner-occupied home assessed at $100,000.  That is 93-cents per month!
Please remember to look for the library referendum after your listing of candidates on the November Ballot and please Vote YES.
