First woman named chair of MUSC oral rehab department

Monica Cayouette, DMD, wants others to know about “best kept secret”

CHARLESTON, SC – Monica J. Cayouette, DMD, associate professor, has been named chair of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation in the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Cayouette served previously as interim chair since July 2014 and has served as director of the Implant Prosthodontic division, Department of Oral Rehabilitation since 2001. Cayouette is the first female to permanently serve in this capacity for the dental medicine college.

“I feel like we have one of the best kept secrets on the MUSC campus, and it’s my vision to have the hard work of so many of my colleagues brought to the forefront, so that our community understands the level of expertise that we have here,” Cayouette said. “I am so excited to permanently fill this chair position, and I look forward to the opportunities we have ahead of us.”

To that end, Cayouette plans to build a comprehensive, digital dentistry fellowship and continuing education hub for the state and beyond, which will in turn continue to bring the latest technologies to patients who need more accuracy, speed and cost savings from the dental care they receive.

Cayouette completed her prosthodontic postgraduate training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, School of Dentistry and earned a master’s in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Cayouette is a member of the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, Academy of Osseointegration, American College of Prosthodontics, South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA), and the Coastal District Dental Association. She is also a fellow of the American Board of Prosthodontics and the American College of Dentists. In 2005, Cayouette was awarded the New Dentist Award of South Carolina by the SCDA. She is active in both undergraduate and graduate dental education, and is also active in organized dentistry through the SCDA. She will maintain limited practice in prosthodontics and dental implants. Her special interests are dental wear and the restoration of dental implants. Cayouette serves as a reviewer for the American Dental Education Journal, the North American Case Research Association, and the South Eastern Case Research Association. She has more than 50 presentations, videos and publications related to her work.

Cayouette resides in Hollywood, S.C. and her husband, Scott Cayouette, DMD, operates a dental practice in West Ashley.
