Interim Chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate Mary Anne Fitzpatrick has received an award from the National Communication Association for her well-known book, Between Husbands and Wives. The Distinguished Book Award is given by the Family Communication Division of NCA to recognize outstanding scholarly books that contribute to the field of family communication.

Anita L. Vangelisti, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, is a colleague of Fitzpatrick’s and nominated her for the award. “Between Husbands & Wives is a classic. As one of the first scholarly books on family communication, it not only changed the landscape of family communication research, it did a great deal to create that landscape. It describes an outstanding body of research that has advanced our knowledge and has greatly influenced scholars, students, and professionals alike. This monograph clearly represents the quality, creativity, and influence acknowledged by the Family Communication Division’s Distinguished Book Award.”

Between Husbands and Wives was published by SAGE in 1988 and provides a detailed description of Fitzpatrick’s body of research on marital communication. Fitzpatrick’s work on couple types, and the patterns of communication and outcomes associated with those types, constitutes one of the most extensive and generative research programs in our field. It has deepened our understanding of the ways couples interact.

Fitzpatrick began her appointment as the interim Chancellor of USC Upstate on August 1, 2016.  She is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Psychology and the Vice President of the University of South Carolina System.
