Florence Attorney Honored with Statewide Award

COLUMBIA, SC – January 14, 2014 – The South Carolina Bar Foundation is proud to announce Mark W. Buyck Jr. as the 2013 DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award recipient for meritorious service to the law and community. This annual recognition is the most prestigious statewide award members of the South Carolina Bar can bestow on a fellow attorney. The award will be presented during the SC Bar Convention on Jan. 24 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Buyck is an attorney at Willcox Buyck & Williams, PA, in Florence. He received his AB in journalism and mass communications from the University of South Carolina (USC) and earned his Juris Doctor at the USC School of Law. He has received honorary degrees from USC and Francis Marion University. He was appointed US Attorney for South Carolina in 1975.

Buyck has held many leadership roles in legal related organizations including president of the SC Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association (SCDTAA), chairman of the National College of District Attorneys Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers and member of the SC Bar Foundation board of directors. He was a member of the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel and the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel.

Buyck’s work in the legal community has received statewide and national recognition. He was honored by both Governors David Beasley and James Edwards with the Order of the Palmetto, received the Judge Hemphill Award from the SCDTAA and named Compleat Lawyer of the Year by the USC School of Law. He is listed in all published editions of Best Lawyers in America.

Buyck currently serves as a member of the USC board of trustees, Carolinas Hospital System board of trustees and the American Board of Trial Advocates national board of directors. He continues to serve as president and founder of the Florence Heritage Foundation.

About the DuRant Award

The DuRant Award was established in 1980 to honor living members of the South Carolina Bar. Its recipient is nominated and selected by his or her professional peers. Selection criteria include meritorious service to the law and the community. This award was created in memory of Charlton DuRant, a well-known Manning attorney who served as state senator and special associate justice of the S.C. Supreme Court.

The South Carolina Bar Foundation, the Heart of the Bar, funds the advancement of justice by improving access, education and accountability.  Since 1987, the Foundation has allocated approximately $45.6 million to various legal-related organizations that work on behalf of the justice community.
