Following successful pilot, City of Charleston to make parking rules on Upper King Street permanent

After a successful pilot program lasting more than a year, the city of Charleston will soon make its weekend parking rules along King Street permanent.
The weekend parking rules, which prohibit street parking on King Street between Spring and Calhoun streets from 6 p.m. – 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, are part of the Charleston Police Department’s larger King Street safety plan, which includes stepped-up police patrols, better lighting and changes in the street’s traffic pattern.
Motorists can expect to see new parking signage starting October 17, with enforcement, including tickets and, when necessary, towing once all signs have been installed.
“These weekend parking rules have been an integral part of our King Street safety plan for more than a year now,” said Charleston Police Department Captain Jason Bruder. “We believe that making these changes permanent, with clear, consistent signage, will help motorists avoid unnecessary tickets as we continue to improve public safety throughout the area.”
These changes will also improve cleanliness by increasing the efficiency of early morning streetsweeping by the city’s Public Service Department.
Alternative, discounted parking for this area is available at the Visitor’s Center Garage, located at 63 Mary Street. This garage offers a $7 flat rate fee after 3 p.m. and a $5 flat rate fee after 5 p.m. The discounted evening rate ends at 3 a.m. and reverts to the regular garage rate ($1/ hour).
Additional parking at the $1/ hour rate is available at the Midtown Garage (558 King Street) and Marion Square Garage (399 King Street).
