April 25, 2020

Adams and Reese is pleased to announce LaJoia Broughton has joined the firm’s Government Relations practice and Columbia office as a Government Affairs Advisor.

Broughton’s years of experience with advocacy and the workings of South Carolina’s political system helps her serve government relations clients and advocate for their interests at the state level. In addition to her political experience, Broughton has managed marketing and sales functions in the private sector; this experience informs how she approaches communication, influence, and building and maintaining strong relationships for long-term client success.

“I am honored to be part of such a great organization and to work with a fantastic and innovative group of people. I am excited about being part of all the exciting things happening at Adams and Reese,” said Broughton.

Prior to joining Adams and Reese, Broughton was the South Carolina State Government Affairs Manager for JUUL Labs, where she was responsible for cultivating relationships with local elected officials and the South Carolina Legislature as well as collaborating with contract lobbyists and third-party organizations to ensure the greatest success for the company’s legislative strategy.

Broughton also served as Director of External Communications at the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission. She led the communications, marketing, and external affairs efforts to increase visibility and build the identity and reputation of the pension fund. Broughton also previously was the Executive Director for the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, where she served as the strategic operations advisor and worked closely with members to coordinate and implement Caucus priorities and its legislative agenda.

Broughton has served as a political consultant for several successful campaigns and served as the South Carolina State Director for Deval Patrick’s 2020 Presidential Campaign. She has proven experience establishing lines of communication with various interest groups as well as developing and maintaining strong relationships with state agencies, public bodies, and other organizations throughout South Carolina.

Broughton received her MMC in Integrated Communications from the University of South Carolina in 2005. She also holds a B.A. in Communication Studies (2003) from Furman University. She is not licensed to practice law.
