Foundation awards $567,600 in grants

The Mary Black Foundation announced today that it awarded $567,660 in grants to 18 nonprofit organizations serving Spartanburg County.  The announcement of the fall grants brings the total grants paid in 2016 to $2,040,140.

Adult Learning Center was awarded $25,000 to provide evening classes at its downtown location.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate was awarded $2,500 to replace its 30-year old telephone system.
Greer Relief and Resources Agency was awarded $10,000 to support health and wellness, education, and life skills classes for people using their need-based services.
Hatcher Garden was awarded $49,630 to construct an additional ½ mile of paved trail on its property.
Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg County was awarded $40,000 to support a mobile dental clinic bringing free oral healthcare to low-income and uninsured children.
Hub City Farmers’ Market was awarded $22,680 for general operating support in 2016.
Impact America  was awarded $25,000 for a vision screening initiative serving low-income, preschool aged children.
Reach Out and Read was awarded $66,500 over 2 years to support an early literacy program implemented in physician’s offices.
Spartanburg Academic Movement was awarded $50,000 to pilot a kindergarten readiness assessment with Spartanburg School District 7.
Spartanburg Art Museum was awarded $18,000 to support COLORs, a high quality art education program for youth living in high-poverty areas throughout Spartanburg County.
– Spartanburg County Parks was awarded $50,000 to construct a pedestrian/bicycle path underneath Asheville Highway that will connect Cleveland Park and Berry Field.
Spartanburg Regional Foundation was awarded $40,000 to expand the outreach efforts of AccessHealth Spartanburg.
Temple Education Ministries was awarded $77,350 to support the construction of a temperature controlled storage area of its soup kitchen.
The Charles Lea Center Foundation was awarded $11,000 to support a healthy lifestyles curriculum designed for people with special needs.
The Walker Foundation was awarded $30,000 for a rebranding plan to raise awareness of the services provided by The Walker Foundation and the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind.
Upstate Forever was awarded $50,000 to support advocacy and policy-level work in Spartanburg County.
– United Way of the Piedmont was awarded $10,000 to support Imagination Library, and early literacy intervention.
Upstate Warrior Solution was awarded $20,000 to work with community partners to reduce homelessness among veterans.
