Fountain Inn Development receives statewide Historic Preservation Award

July 1, 2025

The developers of The Mill at Fountain Inn, the historic property formerly known as the Ellison Flour Mill, were recognized at the 2025 South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards for their transformation of the abandoned landmark into a community hub.

Governor Henry McMaster presented the awards during a ceremony at the State House, in partnership with Preservation South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. The annual awards program celebrates exceptional accomplishments in preserving the state’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The Ellison Flour Mill is the first-ever Fountain Inn project to receive a Preservation Honor Award, which is given to successful and exemplary historic preservation projects around the Palmetto State. The development team was commended for its sensitive rehabilitation, contribution to the preservation-based redevelopment of Fountain Inn, and vision for the industrial relic.

Originally constructed in 1940, the Ellison Flour Mill was a key industrial site in Fountain Inn for decades. After sitting vacant for years, Innovative Hospitality & Development renovated, repurposed, and revitalized the property, in partnership with P+F Construction and Project Plus Architects. They repurposed the three main structures while preserving the historic configuration and industrial character of the original buildings, breathing new life into the abandoned mill site and fueling the city’s ongoing redevelopment.

The Mill at Fountain Inn is now a thriving community gathering spot featuring a brewery, food hall, event venue, and an expansive outdoor greenspace with a large outdoor screen. The transformation of the old flour mill into a vibrant destination is a testament to the power of historic preservation.
