August 14, 2020

Northwestern Mutual, a leading financial services firm, has selected fourteen college seniors to gain valuable financial planning experience in the firm’s nationally recognized internship program in Greenville, Spartanburg and Asheville offices.

Louis Baker, Brendan Beagan, Taylor Ebert, Garrett Clark, Brendan Thompson, Matthew McGetrick and Mariah Tillman of Clemson University work in the Greenville office with two Furman University seniors, Kait Salguerio and Bo McKinney. Hampton Randall, a senior at Wofford College, work in Northwestern Mutual’s Spartanburg office. Sabrina Harpe of UNC Chapel Hill, Matthew Ridley of Western Carolina University and Melvin Rubio of Queens University work in Northwestern Mutual’s Asheville office.

Since 1967, over 52,000 college students have participated in Northwestern Mutual’s internship program, and nearly one-third of interns will pursue full-time careers with the company after graduation. This year marks the 54th anniversary of Northwestern Mutual’s successful internship program, which can be instrumental for a college student’s future career – whether in the financial services industry, sales or other business endeavors.

“Even though many internships in the U.S. were cancelled because of COVID-19, Northwestern Mutual never put a pause on offering internships to college students,” said Tony Allen, Northwestern Mutual College Unit Director and Financial Advisor. “We have actively been hiring financial advisors to meet the needs of clients who are accessing, planning and utilizing financial tools to navigate changes in their financial picture because of the economic impact of the pandemic.”

Northwestern Mutual also ranks in America’s Top 10 internships in financial services and career development from the Vault Guide to Internships 2019. For 23 years, it has ranked among America’s Top 25 internships nationally among all industries and non-profits. Additionally, the Vault Guide to Internships 2019 ranked Northwestern Mutual #15 in the U.S. in terms of positive office culture, flexibility and work-life balance.

“Our interns are gaining valuable experiences during one of our country’s most challenging times,” said Joe Funderburk, Northwestern Mutual College Unit Director and Financial Advisor. “They are seeing first-hand how the expertise of a financial advisor helps clients analyze their financial picture, beyond investments, and calibrate a financial plan to be well positioned to weather any unexpected storm.”
