March 29, 2017

Presented by 701 Center for Contemporary Art Ticketed Preview Party on Thurs., March 30, 7-9 p.m. at 701 CCA

Explore the studios of 64 local artists across the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties during the free, self-guided Columbia Open Studios tour, presented by 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA), on Saturday, April 1, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. To kick off the seventh annual tour weekend, there will be a preview party on Thursday, March 30, 7-9 p.m at 701 CCA in historic 701 Whaley.

Plan your self-guided art tour across the Midlands
Columbia Open Studios is a free, self-led tour of 64 artists’ workspaces across the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties. For the seventh year, local artists will give the public an inside look at their homes, gardens, warehouses and studios and share their inspiration, techniques and a glimpse of the work that goes behind creating their signature pieces – including traditional and nontraditional media.

Also on day two of the tour – Sunday, April 2 – tour-goers exploring Columbia’s beautiful neighborhoods can also enjoy the City of Columbia’s Open Streets event, where blocks of Devine Street will be transformed into a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly haven.

In addition to browsing recent works and enjoying conversations with participating artists (and in some cases, viewing demonstrations), the public can purchase art directly from artists, who keep 100% of all sales accrued throughout the weekend. A key goal of the Columbia Open Studios event is to support Columbia’s vibrant art community and its role in the local economy of the Midlands.

Guests can plan their #ColaOpenStudios tour by picking up a printed, 28-page guidebook with maps and full artist list with sample works at 701 Whaley, or by browsing the guide online at http://www.columbiaopenstudios.org.

Party with the Artists of Columbia Open Studios
701 Center for Contemporary Art will host the official Columbia Open Studios Preview Party on Thursday, March 30, 7 to 9 p.m. at 701 CCA in historic 701 Whaley. Get a sneak peek of participating artists’ work in the building’s first floor “hallway: community art” gallery and view 701 CCA’s current exhibition of film and video productions by Greenville, S.C., artist Jeff Sumerel on the second floor in the Center’s gallery.

Guests will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Bourbon and a cash bar, along with the chance to chat with participating Columbia Open Studios artists, including 701 CCA’s current artist-in-residence, Columbia, S.C., native and acclaimed painter Osamu Kobayashi (visiting from New York City), whose studio in 701 CCA’s live-work loft will be open to visitors during the weekend-long tour.

Tickets, $10 for 701 CCA members and $15 for nonmembers, are available online: http://bit.ly/COSpreviewparty2017 and at the door.
