Furman presents series about global refugee crisis

Furman University will present a series of five events addressing the global refugee crisis. The series begins Wednesday Oct. 26 and runs through Monday, Nov. 7.

“Refugee Crisis: Local and Global Responses,” is free and open to the public.

The series is presented with the help of and funding from Furman University’s Amnesty International, the Muslim Student Association, the Jewish Student Association, the Student Diversity Council, the Religious Council,  the Departments of Religion, History, Political Science, and Sociology, the Chaplain’s office, and the Middle East and Islamic Studies Interdisciplinary minor. Additional funding for the program comes from the Kendrick Poerschke fund and the A J Head fund. A schedule of events follows:

A faith-based reflection on the global refugee crisis

Speaker: Don Kerwin, Center for Migration Studies, NY (CMSNY)

Monday, Nov. 7, 4 p.m., Trone Student Center, Watkins Room        

Refugee Crisis on both sides of the Atlantic: Academic perspectives and practical experiences

Speakers: Dr. Phil Dorroll, Wofford College; Furman graduates Sami Alkoutami (Class of 2016), and Jenna Barnett (Class of 2013); and Furman sophomore Juhee Bhatt

Monday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., Trone Student Center, Watkins Room

How to Welcome Refugees: A conversation with an education advocate and refugee from Afghanistan

Speakers: Furman graduate Jenna Barnett (Class of 2013), and Farahnaz Afaq, a student at Wofford College.
