Furman University Trustees Approve Faculty Promotions, Tenure

GREENVILLE, SSC – April 18, 2011 – During its annual spring meeting Saturday, the Furman University Board of Trustees approved promotions and/or tenure for 16 faculty members and recognized the contributions of five board members whose terms will expire this summer.

Those promoted to the rank of full professor were John P.T. Barrington (History), Mark E. Britt (Music), Erik K. Ching (History), Judith E. Grisel (Psychology), A. Scott Henderson (Education), Steve O’Neill (History), Sean P. O’Rourke (Communication Studies), Katherine Palmer Kaup (Political Science), Elizabeth S. Smith (Political Science), Victoria L. Turgeon (Biology) and Sarah E. Worth (Philosophy).

Those receiving tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor were Jeremy L. Cass (Modern Languages and Literatures), Erin R. Hahn (Psychology), Akan Malici (Political Science), Renita R. Schmidt (Education) and Benjamin W. Storey (Political Science).

The board also granted emeritus status to five retiring professors — James C. Edwards (Philosophy), Noel A.P. Kane-Maguire (Chemistry), Elizabeth G. Kelly (Library), Elaine C. Nocks (Psychology) and Frank M. Powell (Health Sciences).

All promotions, tenure and emeritus status become effective Aug. 1.

The board recognized five trustees whose terms will expire June 30.  Those leaving the board are Alfred G. Childers of Cary, N.C., Aubrey C. Daniels of Tucker, Ga., C. Dan Joyner of Greenville, Patrick W. McKinney of Charleston and Leighan R. Rinker of Atlantis, Fla.
