Garvin Design Group’s interior design at Hammond School’s Science & Innovation Center in Columbia earned Honorable Mention in the Education category at IIDA Carolinas’ DesignWorks 2019. Per the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Carolinas Chapter, its DesignWorks awards are intended “to honor design excellence within the Carolinas Chapter and to encourage new, innovative solutions for interior spaces, elevating the design of our Chapter.” Hammond School’s 30,000 sf Science & Innovation Center is designed to prepare K-12 students through engaged, hands-on learning. With unique features like a 24-foot SciDome, greenhouse, saltwater aquarium, collaboration studies, exposed and identified utilities, and an amphitheater-style monumental stair, the facility is “a building that teaches.” The building’s interior design serves not just as a backdrop for education but is instead an integral component of Hammond’s immersive, experience-based curriculum.
Garvin Design Group’s female-led team of architects and designers was inspired by Hammond School’s commitment to collaboration and interaction. “We used modular lounge groupings and community tables in the lobby to encourage students to engage with each other and their coursework beyond classroom spaces. We kept everything flexible so that Hammond can constantly adapt the space to suit its ever-evolving needs for student-faculty collaboration. Hammond’s signature red and blue colors are carefully integrated in terrazzo and LVT flooring patterns, carpeting, furniture, and wall surfaces.” The new Science & Innovation Center opened in the fall of 2018.
Hood Construction served as the project’s general contractor. The project team included Grimball-Cotterill, RB Todd & Associates, MECA, Inc, Belka Engineering Associates, Mabry Engineering Associates, WONDER by Design, Consonant LLC, and LCK.
