Gateway House joins #GivingTuesday

November 19, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – Gateway House has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Gateway House hopes to raise awareness and funds for its premier mental health program. This will be the first year Gateway House is joining the movement and hopes that this will be another way to reach out to the surrounding Greenville community for support. Occurring this year on December 1, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) with the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It is used to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways.

Gateway offers a world of opportunities for adults with mental illness to live, work, and function as independently as possible. We believe that each of our participants, called members, have a contribution to make, regardless of his or her level of disability, they just need some support and guidance to accomplish their goals. Together, we help those in need face challenges, build confidence and gain acceptance. Our focus is not on “treating” mental illness; rather it is on helping members become productive and self reliant, by using the Clubhouse Model started at Fountain House in New York City. The Clubhouse Model and programs have been so successful, that Gateway has gained an international reputation – creating a demand for colleague training. To date, more than 2,000 colleagues from 40 states and 16 countries have been trained by Gateway in the Clubhouse Model

“You don’t have to be a world leader or a billionaire to give back. #GivingTuesday is about ordinary people coming together doing extraordinary things in their own communities,” says Executive Director Phil Emory. “We would like to give the community an opportunity to learn more about Gateway and what we do here as an organization. We hope that through #GivingTuesday we will raise the awareness of the mental health needs of our Greenville community and how Gateway has been serving these needs since 1984.”
