Gateway moves closer to groundbreaking
January 6, 2025Greenville’s skyline will rise as a project decades in the making moves closer to reality.
The Design and Review Board (DRB) unanimously approved street lighting and landscaping plans for the Gateway project during its Dec. 19 meeting. The 29-story, multi-use development at 250 North Church Street now moves to the permitting phase, the final step before construction begins.
A groundbreaking is expected sometime in 2025.
The Gateway project will become one of the tallest buildings in South Carolina, welcoming residents and visitors arriving to the city from I-385. The development represents a projected $130 million investment and is expected to create more than 100 jobs when completed.
This milestone moves Gateway into the home stretch of a journey that began more than 25 years ago. The site was once home to the Greenville Memorial Auditorium, which closed in 1996 and was demolished the following year. Since then, the property has sat vacant.
The building will include 342 apartments, 12,000 square feet of space for up to five commercial and retail businesses, public plazas, and a parking structure with capacity for more than 350 vehicles.
