GDG takes home two Historic Columbia Preservation Awards

May 11, 2016

Garvin Design Group took home two awards during the Historic Columbia Preservation Awards Luncheon on Wednesday. 612 Whaley was awarded the New Construction in a Historic Context award for creating a new apartment building in the historically appropriate style of the surrounding buildings, Olympia and Granby Mills Apartments. Having worked with PMC Property group on the conversion of Granby and Olympia into apartments in 2007, Garvin Design Group smoothly blended the new with the old using a complementary palette and materials, while also respecting the historic views of Granby and Olympia when designing 612 Whaley.

Their second award was the Adaptive Use award for the City Market complex located at 705, 707, and 711 Gervais Street. These 1860’s era railroad warehouses were drastically altered in the 1940’s. GDG and Hood Construction uncovered and removed the later additions and returned the facades and alleyways back to their original glory, bringing the mixed-use development to life with both commercial and residential spaces. The City Market is now reborn with two new restaurants, a brew pub, a café, two apartments and a venue space, all while paying great respect to the historic significance that City Market played in the railroad system of the 1860s.
