Georgetown County Earns Honorable Mention for Outdoor Trails Initiative
October 29, 2025The South Carolina Association of Counties has recognized Georgetown County with an honorable mention in the 2025 J. Mitchell Graham Memorial Award competition for its Georgetown Outdoor Adventure Trails project.
The initiative, known as GOAT, was launched in 2024 by Georgetown County Parks and Recreation to encourage residents and visitors to explore the county’s parks, waterways, and trails. The program includes marked and maintained routes through a variety of natural and urban environments and offers events such as guided hikes, paddles, and community cleanups.
Participants have logged more than 20,000 miles annually through hiking, biking, and paddling since the program’s start. GOAT also includes fitness challenges and educational programs designed to reach residents of all ages.
The J. Mitchel Graham Memorial Award was established in 1972 to recognize counties that address community challenges, implement operational improvements or enhance residents’ quality of life in a unique way. The award was named for past SCAC President J. Mitchell Graham, who served the Association from 1969 to 1970.
