Georgetown County Library and Old Georgetown Creamery team up to cool down summer with free ice cream for young readers

June 18, 2026

The Georgetown County Library has exciting news for local families looking to beat the heat and keep their children engaged this summer. The library has officially announced that Old Georgetown Creamery is the proud sponsor of the Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program 2026.

To motivate young minds and combat the “summer slide”—the learning loss that can happen when regular school routines pause—this year’s challenge offers a delicious incentive: free double scoops of ice cream for participants who complete their reading goals.

How the Challenge Works:

  1. Register & Track: Families can sign up for the program at their local library branch and grab an official reading log to track books throughout the summer.

  2. Read: Kids and teens are encouraged to dig into great books, explore hidden worlds, and discover new stories.

  3. Redeem: Once reading logs are completed, participants simply bring them back to the Children’s Department at the Georgetown Main Library Branch.

  4. Enjoy: Trade in that completed log for a FREE double scoop ice cream ticket, courtesy of Old Georgetown Creamery!

The Unearth a Story theme celebrates the thrill of discovery, curiosity, and literacy. This partnership aims to make reading a rewarding community experience, ensuring that the more local youth read this summer, the more they win. Beyond the reading challenge, the library will also host special themed programs, events, and activities all season long.

Families can visit the Children’s Department at the Georgetown Main Library to pick up their reading gear and kick off the challenge today.
