GES students raise $5,105 for American Heart Association

Gilbert Elementary School students raised $5,105 for the American Heart Association as part of the Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser.
Over a two-week period in February, GES students spent some time jumping rope as part of the fundraiser. They also learned how to maintain a lifestyle that will help keep their hearts healthy.
GES students in Angie Flitter’s third-grade class received sports equipment to use at recess as a reward for 55 percent of the students donating money to the American Heart Association. Fourth-Grade Student Bryson McMurray and Third-Grade Student Charles Jake Miller received recognition for raising the most money, with each student donating $265 to the American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association conducted an art contest as part of the Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser. Elementary school students had to draw a picture that depicts a healthy heart.
Elementary school students in the Midlands submitted more than 50 entries for the art contest. The American Heart Association selected seven winners, including three students from GES.
GES Third-Grade Student Hilda Ibarra won the art contest, receiving a bicycle and an art kit as prizes. Savannah Shirley and Quiana Tolen, fifth-grade students, each won honorable mention in the contest, receiving art kits as prizes. The students’ artwork was displayed at the 2016 Midlands Heart Ball, which was held in February at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, South Carolina.
GES Physical Education Teacher Jill Strainer helped coordinate the Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser at GES, receiving a $50 Amazon gift card in recognition of her efforts.
