GHS names Thomas head varsity boys basketball coach

GILBERT, SC – Gilbert High announces that Riley J. Thomas has been selected to serve as head coach for varsity boys basketball.
Thomas has served as the GHS varsity girls head basketball coach since 2009. Prior to that, he was the assistant varsity boys basketball coach for five years. He also coaches junior varsity and varsity outside linebackers for the Gilbert High football team.
Thomas started his coaching career in Illinois where he served as assistant junior high boys basketball coach for three years. He moved to South Carolina in 1996 to teach at C.A. Johnson High School as well as coach the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams. He then moved to Brookland-Cayce High School in 2000 and served as head varsity girls basketball coach.
“I am confident that Coach Thomas will bring an edge to the boys program after the exceptional job he did with the Lady Indians basketball program,” said Gilbert High Principal Ann O’Cain.
A U.S. History and world geography teacher, Thomas earned his Bachelor of Arts in social science and teacher certification from Eastern Illinois University. He is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association and the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.
