New Children’s Ministry Center approved by Augusta’s Historic Planning Commission

GREENVILLE, SC – Good City Architects, an architecture and interior design firm based in Greenville, S.C., has received approval by Augusta’s Historic Planning Commission for its design of a new Children’s Ministry Center at First Presbyterian Church, Augusta. The project is an addition to the church’s complex on Telfair Street, of which the oldest portion is the sanctuary, completed in 1812.

The Children’s Ministry Center will add approximately 20,000 square feet of classrooms and assembly space to the church’s three-acre campus and complement its mostly Gothic architecture. Originally designed by famed architect Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument, First Presbyterian Church is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

“We are excited about what God has in store for our church and community as Good City’s design comes to fruition,” said Dr. George Robertson, Senior Pastor. “This project will free up additional education space for adults as the new Children’s Ministry Center becomes the space where we can nurture children, equip parents, reach families, and minister to urban children via Hope for Augusta programs throughout the week. All of this development helps us as we seek to fulfill our mission to restore people and rebuild places with the gospel of Jesus Christ to the glory of God.”

“The people of First Presbyterian have demonstrated remarkable stewardship through the continued use of this site for more than 200 years,” said Ron Geyer, founder and principal of Good City Architects. “Their investment in this building is indicative of their longstanding commitment to ministry in and to the heart of Augusta.”

Construction of the Children’s Ministry Center is expected to start this summer.
