Goodbye Summer – It’s Labor Day Weekend Again

It’s hard to believe summer is already on the way out.  Didn’t it just begin?

Labor Day weekend has long been seen as the culmination of the summer season and is celebrated with big sales, fireworks and the kickoff of college football.  The holiday originated on May 1, 1886 as a celebration of the American labor movement by labor unions, but following the Haymarket Massacre three days later, the official holiday was moved to September in 1887.

If you’re not one of the millions of families taking their final vacation of the summer, there are a lot of celebrations and events going on around town this weekend.  However you choose to celebrate, take this weekend to rock your favorite summer trends before they become passé.  Here are some of my favorites:

1.   Florals.  A huge trend for Spring & Summer, these blooms will fade.  Just like in nature, flowers are not a huge motif moving into Fall.  We will continue to see bright colors, but they will be more geometric and color blocked.  Use this weekend to embrace your inner gardener and enjoy one last full bouquet piece.

2.   Exposed skin.  Between cropped tops, shorts and strapless dresses, summer is all about exposing skin.  This overt nakedness will transition to sheer pieces for Fall & Winter, so let your skin shine free this weekend.  In September short-shorts and exposed midriffs will look like last season.

3.   Linen, Eyelet & Seersucker.  Light, airy summer fabrics are essential during the season, but do not transition beyond it.   These are examples of truly seasonal items.  Just because the seasons change, doesn’t mean the weather will, so you need substitutes to these pieces that work for Fall.  Cotton, silk and jersey are seasonally appropriate alternatives that will keep you cool as we wait for the temperatures to cool down.

4.   Sandals.  Wedges, sling backs, flip-flops and slides are everywhere during Summer, but like seasonal fabrics they look out of place in September.  One of the easiest ways to transition your outfit from one season to the next is to change your shoes.  Opt for closed-toed, darker or suede options to give your look more weight and grounding for the coming season.

Whether you use this weekend to embrace one last all-summer ensemble or mix in your favorite new fall pieces, have fun and enjoy being carefree before school, work and life pick back up and the holidays are upon us.
