Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Selected as Architectural Firm for Clemson/SCRA Innovation Center

March 4, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – March 4, 2010 – Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood is pleased to announce the firm has been selected as the architect of record for a new Clemson/SCRA innovation center with Harper Corporation of Greenville serving as the design/build contractor on the project.  A collaboration of Clemson University and the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), construction will begin in mid-March on the approximately 43,000 square-foot innovation center complex in Anderson County to support the state’s growing advanced materials industry.

As one of the first large-scale projects in the state since recently opening our office in Greenville, the Clemson/SCRA innovation center project really showcases the strength and breadth of our firm, said Michael Allen, architecture project manager with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood.  In addition to the architectural design of the project, our firm is handling the civil engineering, landscape architecture, interior design, and geotechnical engineering for the site.

Clemson’s innovation center will occupy approximately 25,000 square feet and will be dedicated to supporting tenants who are interested in growing start-up companies or landing parties associated with Clemson research, especially in the area of advanced materials.  SCRA will house secure research in approximately 18,000 square feet, with the remaining square footage devoted to a common area and collaboration space.

GMandC is designing the building to be LEED Silver Certified and is using the latest in building design software, Autodesk Revit.  This building information modeling system helps architects and contractors coordinate through an integrated process built on coordinating information from design through construction and into operations using three-dimensional modeling.

The facility will be located adjacent to the Clemson University Advanced Materials Research Laboratory, where Clemson offers some of the nation’s top research facilities in the areas of optical materials/photonics and electron microscopy and houses cutting-edge research programs.
