January 20, 2016

Goose Creek High’s VEX Robotics team, the Binary Botz, received the Excellence Award at the Bluffton High School New Year’s Bash VEX Competition earlier this month.

The Excellence Award is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics Competition. This award is given to a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX robotics program. Key criteria for the award include Tournament Qualification Round ranking, Programming Skills Challenge ranking, Robot Skills Challenge ranking, Design Award ranking and other Judged Award rankings.

The Binary Botz finished third overall of 19 teams, and reached the final round of the competition. Their stellar performance qualified them for the State Robotics and National Robotics Championships in Iowa on April 9 through April 12.

The following students are members of the Binary Botz at Goose Creek High: Ken Aliento, John Ona, Mark Quek, Hunter Tillman, Joseph Morton and Sergio Bugarin. Faculty members Geoff Sklar and Sara Smith coach the team. The Binary Botz will compete again on February 20, 2016, at West Ashley High School and on March 12, 2016, at the VEX State Championship in Columbia. The ultimate goal for the team is to qualify for the World Championship in Louisville, Ky., on April 20, 2016 through April 23, 2016.
