Gov. Haley Proclaims April 16 Healthcare Decisions Day

April 13, 2015
COLUMBIA, SC – In observance of National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), April 16, the SC Bar is leading a local initiative to increase awareness and understanding of advance care planning from both the legal and the medical perspective.

“It’s never too early to talk to your loved ones about their wishes in any event where they can’t speak for themselves,” said Cal Watson, SC Bar President. “National Healthcare Decisions Day is a great opportunity to start those tough conversations, and the SC Bar is ready to help.”
In an effort to increase the total number of South Carolinians with advance directives, Governor Nikki Haley has signed a proclamation from the SC Bar recognizing April 16, 2015 as Healthcare Decisions Day in South Carolina.

“[I] encourage all South Carolinians to work together with the medical and legal communities to ensure that an individual’s wishes for healthcare, particularly as it relates to end-of-life care, are prepared, protected and followed,” Gov. Haley said in the proclamation.

On April 16 in conjunction with NHDD, the SC Bar will host a Healthcare Decisions Clinic in Columbia to assist the public creating healthcare power of attorney and living will documents. More information about NHDD and free tools to create these forms are available online at www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org
