Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics to host duo of fall events to benefit STEM research programs

September 9, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) will hold a duo of Southern-inspired fall events to benefit the school’s growing research programs.

The Magnolia luncheon will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2015, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kalmia Gardens, and the Sip & Sup cocktail party will be held October 1, 2015, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the GSSM lawn in Hartsville.

The Magnolia luncheon will feature special guest Matt Lee of the Lee Brothers, an award-winning cookbook author and television personality. Recipes from Lee’s cookbooks will be served during the luncheon.

At Sip & Sup, a Southern-style celebration will take center stage as supporters of GSSM gather for some of the finest food, drinks and music in South Carolina. The event will feature quintessential Palmetto state dishes like shrimp and grits, biscuits, roasted peanuts and pies from local vendors.

“These events are unlike any we’ve ever hosted before,” said Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation and EVP Strategic Direction, GSSM. “We want to bring together our friends and supporters from across the Pee Dee and beyond to celebrate what we all love about life in the South. At the same time, we’re celebrating GSSM and its limitless approach to engaging students in STEM research.”

Proceeds from the events will benefit GSSM’s Summer Program for Research Interns and its international counterpart, the Research Experience Scholars Program, which give students an opportunity to conduct research at a university or corporate research and development facility under the mentorship or professional scientists, entrepreneurs or engineers in the US, Europe or Asia.

“Our research programs are the cornerstone of our students’ education and I am looking forward to seeing how we can further expand to accommodate their passions and interests,” said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.
