Governor Henry McMaster recognizes impact of “Kidz in Lids” school program

Event raises funds to help support cancer patients and their families
This year, hundreds more will be diagnosed with childhood cancer in North and South Carolina and the need for support will grow. Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas (CCP) plays a major role in the effort to help Carolina families with children battling cancer. Inclusion efforts are crucial and its “Kidz in Lids” school event gets students involved in the process. In just a few years Kidz in Lids has raised over $100,000 for childhood cancer families and will have 210 or more schools participating this year.
The program has garnered the attention it deserves. On Tuesday, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster will sign a proclamation declaring February 15, 2022, as South Carolina Kidz in Lids Day.
“Programs like ‘Kidz in Lids’ bring much-needed attention and care to pediatric cancer, which is the number one disease-related cause of death among our children,” said Governor McMaster. “I encourage all South Carolinians to acknowledge and show their appreciation for the students and educators who generously support childhood cancer patients and their families.”
“Kidz in Lids” is a student-founded program in schools that helps raise money on behalf of CCP. Schools pick a day when students can wear their favorite hat in school if they bring in a one-dollar donation. Teachers join in on the fun by donating $5 to wear jeans for the day.
“We’re thrilled Gov. McMaster understands this program’s importance. ‘Kidz in Lids’ allows students to show compassion for their peers who are facing the extreme challenges caused by childhood cancer,” said CCP Executive Director Laura Allen. “It’s a valuable learning experience with lessons that extend beyond the school campus. It cultivates a sense of community, fosters empathy for others, builds leadership skills and provides an example of how competition can be used for a greater good.”
When families of children with cancer are at their most vulnerable, CCP is there to bear some of the burden. CCP provides immediate, comprehensive and continuous support to children battling cancer, including travel assistance, lodging and emotional support. In 2021, CCP provided needed support to the families of 1,639 children with cancer. Based on National Cancer Institute data, CCP projects an additional 700 or more North and South Carolina children will be diagnosed and the organization expects to serve the families of more than 2,000 children in 2022.

CCP provides immediate, comprehensive and continuous support to children battling cancer. They are referred to CCP by pediatric oncology treatment centers at diagnosis and assisted until they reach age 21 due to frequent after-effects of treatment. CCP is a 501(C)(3) public charity that began as a local service club project in Spartanburg, S.C. in 2001 and now serves all of North and South Carolina.
