Governor Nikki Haley Announces Hurricane Awareness Week

June 3, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Governor Nikki Haley issued a statewide proclamation recognizing June 1-7 as Hurricane Awareness Week. The proclamation highlights the importance of hurricane preparedness across the state before the onset of the 2014 Atlantic Tropical Storm Season.

This year also marks the 25th  anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, which if struck South Carolina today would cause an estimated $16.6 billion dollars in damage and destroy approximately 30,000 homes.

Gov. Haley’s proclamation recognizes the need for families and individuals to develop an emergency plan in the event a storm makes landfall in South Carolina. This year, the National Hurricane Center is predicting a mild storm season with approximately 12 name storms, and six hurricanes developing in the Atlantic Ocean.
