Governor proclaims Oct. 22 Lights On Afterschool Day in South Carolina
October 22, 2026Governor Henry McMaster has proclaimed Thursday, October 22, 2026, as Lights On Afterschool Day in South Carolina, recognizing the critical role afterschool programs play in supporting students, working families and communities across the state.
The proclamation coincides with the national Lights On Afterschool celebration, which highlights the importance of quality afterschool programs and the need to expand access for children and families.
In his proclamation, Governor McMaster recognizes afterschool programs for supporting academic achievement, providing hands-on learning experiences and helping young people develop essential workforce and life skills. The proclamation also underscores the demand for these opportunities, noting that for every child enrolled in an afterschool program, four more are waiting to get into a program.
“The Governor’s proclamation sends an important message: Afterschool programs are essential to the success of South Carolina’s children, families and future workforce,” said Zelda Waymer, president and CEO of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance (SCAA). “These programs do more than provide a safe place after school. They create opportunities for students to discover their potential, build meaningful relationships and develop skills that prepare them for the future.”
That impact was on display earlier this month when SCAA hosted its annual STEM Extravaganza at Segra Park in Columbia, bringing together students from 14 South Carolina counties for an afternoon of hands-on learning, innovation and career exploration.
The event featured 56 interactive STEM exhibits, connecting young people with educators, industry professionals and community organizations. Students explored science, technology, engineering and mathematics through engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and introduce potential career pathways.
The event showcased the power of statewide collaboration, bringing together students from 14 South Carolina counties, 56 interactive STEM exhibits and more than 150 volunteers and exhibit support personnel. Post-event surveys reinforced its success, with more than 98% of both student and adult respondents saying they would return next year — a strong reflection of the impact of community partnerships in inspiring South Carolina’s next generation of STEM leaders.
“STEM Extravaganza is a powerful example of what happens when communities come together to invest in young people,” Waymer added. “The reach of this year’s event — from rural communities to urban centers — shows what’s possible when we work together to make learning accessible, engaging and meaningful. But opportunities like these shouldn’t be limited to one event or one community.”
Organized nationally by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool brings together schools, community organizations, families and advocates to celebrate programs that keep young people safe, engaged and inspired beyond the school day.
As South Carolina joins the national celebration, SCAA recognizes the educators, program providers, volunteers, businesses and community partners whose work makes these opportunities possible, while continuing its efforts to expand access to afterschool and summer learning statewide.
